Do you fault them for trying to enjoy life? Obviously they are making an attempt at making Jehoobie happy while still giving their kids a reason to enjoy the season. Hypocritical? Of course. No I never saw anyone in my old congregations go any farther than a turkey (cheaper in the season) dinner in Nov. I have heard of some who had a "Gift" day and that seemed a bit suspect. Religion is so stupid.

Do You Think “Higher Education “Is All That??
by minimus inas jehovah’s witnesses, we were regularly told how awful a college education is.
i’m no longer associated with the religion but i am not so pro university.
it’s not because i think you are better off without a degree.

I graduated in 2007. In the US. Two years of community college and three years at university. In California at that, the bastion of liberals. Never felt lefty pressure. I was an ex JW returning to school in my forties. Perhaps I ignored the politics of the day then. I'd like to think I was aware. Sure there were left leaning student groups and protests but no more than before. The staff were very careful to hide their bias. There were just as many "Young Republicans" at the same time.

I'm curious, did you attend a university Min?
I did and told one professor in front of the class that what he said was bullshit. Got an A in the class. I guess its not always the case that you fail. Did someone fail you for speaking out? It was never my experience even though one instructor said I was unusual because "No offense but the JW's he had taught weren't very intellectual nor intellectually honest." He was a prince, insert sarcasm.

Going in different directions
by dothemath inwas visiting with some old friends a while ago, and got to hear some interesting updates about their congregation.. there is a new family moved in, from the ukraine, and are very zealous.
when giving their experience (they're quite new in the "truth") they feel strongly that the religion has changed their life.. they were ready to divorce, but from studying the bible, etc., they are now a happy family.. its really a yearbook type example that make a lot witnesses feel vindicated.. on the other extreme, in the same congregation, a teenager just graduating (an elders son) just up and left and moved in with a "worldly" family.
he told his parents he doesn't believe it's the truth, and actually believes in evolution.. he was being "encouraged" to get baptized, but he managed to avoid that.

In the U.S. you are not legally an adult till 18. Leaving at 17 still could be his choice but they are legally libel for any of his misdeeds. Not enough info. I wish him well.

Why does he stay in?
by Probablyshouldrun ini was seeing a jw man for about a year and a half until l broke it off with him last week.
we met on a dating site.
he shouldn’t have been on there, of course, but he was lonely.

There certainly are many babies who whine when their assertions are rebuffed. Unfortunately in the era of Donald's "Fake news" tirades, all assertions, even those with evidence, are dismissed out of hand. We have entered the time of "Alternate facts" and evidence when presented is disregarded. As the witch from the Wizard of Oz said in the movie as she melted, "What a world!". Sorry I don't know exactly the time and frame she says it in.

are the witnesses now considered "clergy " ?
by lancelink inyears ago when i was a jw, one of their cornerstone teachings was that they were nothing like babylon the great.
i remember being taught that the witnesses not using any type of clergy class distinction was proof that they had the right religion.. well, recently we had this article in the local paper, and an elder who was no doubt the presiding overseer tried to use the clergy class excuse to get out of answering questions regarding a child abuse case.
here is the statement that really got to me.

Yep I believe so. The elders are using the clergy and penitent privilege to try to cover their lack of informing on the perpetrators. It isn't working any longer because they broke any such relationship of trust or confidentiality by calling Bethel and discussing cases.

Dealing With Smelly People
by minimus ini can never understand why some people simply stink.they don’t smell themselves??
i knew of certain jws that had to be counseled many times because they refused to regularly bathe, wash their hair or use deodorant.
and it’s not just witnesses.

I agree Min. Even so, there are those cases that confuse until more info is provided. We had a couple in their forties who dressed like hillbillies and reeked. She needed a shave and wore short nylon calf high nylon stocking socks with a midi skirt. He tended to dip his hand into the front of his pants to scratch his bullocks before he shook your hand. Years later I learned that as a young woman she witnessed her mother and sister burn to death in a house fire. OK, she gets a pass for being mentally fractured. Him? Not so much.

Boys pre-teen sexuality / erections.? Why ? If only for procreation ?
by smiddy3 inthis has been a bug bear my whole life i think and not really sure how to address it as nobody else ever seems to do so.. and it relates to the question if god really created humans .
he did a shithouse job in this regard.. i can`t speak for females this is entirely a male thing.
from my perspective.. male adolescents at a very ,very young age , babies , get erections periodically and it has nothing to do with sexual fantasies ,because they don`t even have an awareness of sex between a male and a female at this time.. and it is second inbuilt nature to masturbate to relieve, get rid of the erection .

Apparently boys have erections before birth. I think I read that on Wikipenis. Just kidding. It was regular google.

I realize that this is kind of personal, but
by stillin inwhat does being a "spiritual person" mean to you?
the religion would have had us to believe that our place in the organization is definitive of that.
or how often we pray.
